Auto Body Mechanic and Preparing the Car for Restoration

An auto body mechanic does not immediately put paint in a car to be restored. Some process and jobs still has to be done before finalizing the car’s color and appearance. Here are some preparatory jobs done by an auto body mechanic.

1. Bending and removing of lumps and bumps on a car’s body

A car that has sustained a lot of damage during a vehicular accident will naturally have bended and broken parts. Sometimes lumps and bumps can be seen on damaged vehicles. In order to have an easier time when preparing the car for painting, the lumps and bended parts need to be fixed by the auto body mechanic.

2. Cutting of heavily damaged parts

Sometimes the bended and broken parts of a car can’t be fixed by an auto body technician. In these cases, the only remedy is to cut the damaged parts. There are tools needed to effectively remove unwanted and damaged parts of the vehicle and only a qualified and good auto body mechanic can accurately use it.

3. Straightening of a car’s frame

A car’s frame can have an odd shape after a heavy collision or accident. This is the reason why an auto body mechanic needs to fix a car’s frame in order to prepare it for painting and to restore its integrity. Sometimes, metal sheets need to be welded into the car’s body to ensure its durability.

4. Sanding of a car’s body

After all the lumps and bumps, bended and broken parts of the vehicle has been fixed, the next thing to do is to sand the car’s entire body. Sanding can be done with the use of a power tool to save time when preparing the car for painting. Old and damaged paint can only be removed with a sander and should be carefully done by a qualified auto body mechanic.

5. Application of adhesives

Paint can’t be applied directly to a car’s body because it can easily peel off as also taught in auto body repair schools. This is the reason why the most experienced auto body mechanic uses adhesives before applying the paint. The right amount of adhesives is evenly applied all over the car’s body. Sometimes, an auto body mechanic applies several layers of adhesives to make the appearance of a car look smooth.

6. Painting

This is one of the most tedious processes when restoring a car’s appearance for an auto body technician. First, you need to properly mix colors that will suit the car. An auto body mechanic always listens to what his clients say when it comes to choice of color. After a choice has been made, the paint is applied on the car’s body. An auto body mechanic needs to paint the car carefully so that lumps and other dents won’t appear on it after painting is finished.
